Al-Nisa Association

Background

The A- nisa group was set up in November 1998 by a group of Muslim women in Northern Ireland.

Why was it necessary to set it up?

The group was needed to address specific problems facing Muslim women in Northern Ireland.
The organisation provides a support network for women who are living in isolation.

A number of Muslim women expressed the desire to have the support of a women’s group to share experiences, and help support each other.

Aim and objectives

  • To unite and organise Muslim women in the community.
  • To develop and reinforce friendship networks.
  • To address and discuss the issues relevant to Muslim women
  • To decrease the sense of social isolation within the Muslim community through Arabic, Urdu and Malay language classes, organising festival celebrations, cultural events, etc.
  • To support women in all aspects of living, such as health, childcare, education, employment, and provide information to the women e.g. immigration advice.
