More than 50 people attended the first political debate in Derry for this May’s upcoming elections, hosted by NICEM North West. Candidates debated topics from abortion to EU membership to the lack of BME candidates standing for the political parties.
NICEM hosted this event as part of its on-going series of seminars to engage local BME and migrant communities in the political process and to encourage politicians to understand the issues facing local BME and migrant communities.
Speaking to Derry Now in the run up to the event, NICEM NW Regional Manager Kat Healy spoke about how, “It can be quite confusing to register to vote for the first time in Northern Ireland, especially when you’re unsure of your eligibility for different types of elections.”
In addition to the hustings itself, an electoral officer was present at the event to host a photo I.D. clinic in order to register eligible voters.
